July 2026 Dev Blog: League Classic
Complete breakdown of Riot's July 14, 2026 League Classic dev blog. Greatest-hits design, 60 champions, runes, passes, portraits, and The Council.
Greatest Hits, Not One Patch
Riot Yina's July 14 dev blog defines League Classic as a greatest-hits collection anchored in Season 3—not a frozen snapshot of one old patch. Following mid-July PBE feedback, FeralPony tightened the content window to Seasons 1–3 exclusively on FeralPony July 17 Response. The mode pulls iconic elements: every Summoner Spell including Fortify, almost every early-era item plus Zz'Rot Portal, and pre-rework champion kits.
The hard line: no Yasuo. Riot excluded hyper-mobile modern champion fantasies to preserve Classic's slower combat pacing where spells cost more, hit harder, and stuns last longer.
Champions and Progression
Launch roster: 60 champions (OG 40 plus 20 hand-picked 2009–2013 picks). Owned champions carry over from live League. Others unlock via Classic Level or the Shop. Free champion rotation returns.
Classic Levels are a one-time progression track—gain levels by playing, unlock Masteries at Level 4, rune pages, IP, BE, Rustier Blitzcrank skin, and Council access. Seasonal Classic Passes add free and paid tracks with cosmetics.
Runes, Items, and Map
All runes unlock at Tier 3 baseline—no upgrade grind. Start with three rune pages, gain two from Classic Levels, buy more with IP. Nearly every rune players actually used returns with buffs to underpicked options.
The Classic Rift restores wraith camps, buff buddies, faster jungle respawns, and higher camp damage—buy Health Potions unless you are Warwick. Visual readability improvements include updated lighting and textures without changing layout.
Cosmetics and Community
Classic Skins restore 2009–2013 champion visuals via Classic Skin Tokens from passes or the Shop. Classic Chromas add era flair like Tundra Warwick. Portraits rotate on loading screens as collectible alternate splashes.
The Council unlocks through Classic Level with voting power scaling by playtime. Players influence champion additions, Classic skins, and gameplay changes while Riot retains balance authority.
