Runes Return to League

League Classic restores the original rune system that modern League replaced with the current rune reforge in 2018. Instead of selecting from a simplified keystone tree, you purchase individual runes across offense, defense, and utility paths and arrange them into custom rune pages before each game. This system was a defining feature of early League account progression.

At Classic launch, all players receive tier 3 runes immediately—eliminating the old grind to level 30 before accessing optimal runes. You still configure pages manually, and rune page slots unlock through Classic Pass progression on Classic Levels. For step-by-step setup, see Set Up Rune Pages.

Rune Page Structure

Each rune page contains slots for marks (offense), seals (defense), glyphs (utility), and quintessences (powerful single bonuses). You select one rune per slot type up to the maximum allowed—typically nine marks, nine seals, nine glyphs, and three quintessences per page. Different champions and roles demand different rune combinations.

Riot confirmed Classic uses runes from the Season 3 era with minor balance adjustments for modern readability. Armor penetration marks, ability power glyphs, health seals, and movement speed quintessences form the foundation of most pages. Use Rune Recommender for champion-specific page suggestions.

Page Slots and Progression

Classic Pass progression grants additional rune page slots beyond the free starter pages. This mirrors how veteran accounts accumulated 20+ pages for every matchup in old League. Invest Classic Levels into page slots early if you play multiple roles—see Summoner's Journey for milestone rewards.

Pre-made pages from the rune recommender tool serve as templates. Copy them into your custom pages and adjust quintessences based on lane matchup. Against AP Sion mid, swap magic resist seals. Against Vayne top, prioritize armor. Adaptive page editing is a core Classic skill absent from modern League's fixed rune selection.

Rune Costs and IP

In original League, runes cost IP to purchase—a significant investment for new accounts. Classic simplifies this by granting tier 3 runes at launch while using Classic Pass progression for page slots and cosmetic rewards. IP still matters for champion unlocks on IP & Currency, but rune access is not gated behind account level.

This design choice lets new players focus on learning champion kits and item builds rather than grinding rune purchases. Veterans appreciate skipping the rune IP sink while still enjoying the strategic depth of custom page configuration that defined early competitive League.

Integrating Runes with Masteries

Runes work alongside the mastery system—offense, defense, and utility mastery trees documented on Offense Tree, Defense Tree, and Utility Tree. A complete pre-game setup requires configuring both rune pages and mastery point allocation for your champion and role.

Synergize rune stats with item builds from Core & Starting. AD marks with armor pen masteries complement Last Whisper rush. AP glyphs with Archmage mastery amplify Deathfire Grasp burst. Summoner spell choices on Summoner Spells complete the pre-game optimization puzzle that Classic rewards.
