Positional Preference System
How League Classic positional preferences replace role call-outs. Queue flow, preference ranking, and matchmaking tradeoffs explained.
Goodbye Role Racing
Old League required typing your role fast in champion select—300 WPM call-outs and mid or feed threats. Riot Yina confirmed Classic replaces this with a positional preference system where you rank desired roles in order before queueing.
The MSI 2026 showmatch demonstrated smooth role assignment without pre-draft disputes. This quality-of-life change is one of the few modernizations Riot kept while restoring old kits, items, and map pacing.
How Preferences Work
Select roles in priority order when entering Classic Draft. Matchmaking attempts your first choice, avoids your last preference, and may assign second or third choice to maintain reasonable queue times during launch week volume.
Preferences do not guarantee your main every game—flex willingness improves match speed. Communicate secondary roles with premade groups in custom games or Discord while the system handles solo queue assignment.
Queue Time Tradeoffs
Strict first-role-only mentality increases queue times especially for popular mid and ADC preferences. Supporting fill improves matchmaking health—Riot designed the system for social play where friends cover role gaps in premades.
Co-op vs AI ignores preference pressure for learning new champions from Best Starters. Custom games let groups assign roles manually for scrim practice.
Draft Strategy by Role
Top: Garen, Nasus, Singed from Top Lane. Jungle: Master Yi, Amumu, Lee Sin on Jungle. Mid: Kassadin, Annie, Sion per Mid Lane. ADC: Vayne, Ashe on ADC. Support: Blitzcrank, Leona on Support.
