Classic Skins Philosophy

Classic Skins recreate visual aesthetics from League of Legends' first seasons—original splash art styles, simplified model designs, and color palettes that veterans remember from 2009–2013. Following PBE community feedback in mid-July 2026, Game Director Brian Feeney (FeralPony) announced Classic Skins are now free and unlocked for everyone—reversing the initial 500 RP per-skin plan that sparked outrage.

Classic Skins will become the default appearance for every champion that has one, replacing modern base models in Classic mode. Not all 60 launch champions ship with Classic Skins at launch, and some modern skins remain playable. As of August 3, 2026, Classic Chromas are free when you already own the matching modern skin—full policy on Chromas Now Free and Portraits & Chromas.

Free Default Skins — PBE Update

Insider Gaming and BO3.gg confirmed the PBE change within days of Classic's July 14 PBE activation: all available Classic default skins unlock automatically on the test server. FeralPony stated Riot is also working to restore as much of champions' old voice-over lines as possible for additional authenticity.

The Classic Skin Token economy may change before July 29 launch—Riot has not finalized what happens to tokens previously planned for skin unlocks. Track PBE Feedback Updates for ongoing PBE adjustments including Season 3 content cutoff tightening and champion kit revisions like Katarina 2012 Kit.

Launch Status — Free at Go-Live

At July 29, 2026 live launch, every available Classic Skin ships unlocked for free and becomes the default base look for that champion in Classic. Classic Skin Tokens for base looks are gone. Premium Classic Pass still focuses on Portraits, Prestige Magma Chamber Jax, emotes, titles, and IP multipliers—not gating retro base models.

Portraits—alternate loading-screen splash styles from playful doodles to reinterpretations—rotate in champ select and load screens. Titles like "Season 3 Veteran" and "Classic Summoner" display in Classic lobbies. Chromas and future seasonal cosmetics remain the paid cosmetic layer on Portraits & Chromas.

How Classic Skins Unlock

Own the champion in Classic (carryover from live ownership, IP purchase, Classic Level rewards, or free rotation) and the Classic Skin equips automatically when that skin exists for the champion. No token grind and no 500 RP fee for the base retro model.

Classic Chromas: if you own the modern skin, Riot grants the Classic Chroma free and refunds prior double purchases—see Chromas Now Free. Prestige Magma Chamber Jax remains on the paid Classic Pass track—see Prestige Magma Chamber. Plan IP spend on Future Additions wave-two picks so new Council champions inherit free Classic Skins the moment you unlock them.

Classic Skins vs Live Skins

Live League skins you own do not automatically appear in Classic mode with modern visual designs. Classic uses its own cosmetic ecosystem to maintain period authenticity. Some live legacy skins may receive Classic equivalents with adjusted visuals matching the mode's art direction.

This separation prevents visual anachronisms—a Pulsefire Ezreal skin would break Classic's 2013 aesthetic. Players who want modern visuals play live League; Classic Skins serve the nostalgia audience exclusively.

Future Season Skins

Each Classic season introduces new Classic Skins tied to Council-added champions and seasonal themes. When Caitlyn and Fiora join via Future Additions, expect Classic Skin releases matching their original visual designs from their release years.

Community voting through The Council may influence which champions receive Classic Skins first—see How Voting Works for how player feedback shapes cosmetic priorities alongside champion additions.
