Classic Chromas Free for Modern Skin Owners
Riot's August 3, 2026 Classic Chroma policy: free chromas if you own the modern skin, automatic RP refunds for prior purchases, and what still costs money.
What Riot Changed on August 3
Days after Classic launched, players pushed back on paying 300 RP again for chromas they already owned on live League—Tundra Warwick, Blast Zone Heimerdinger, Exiled Morgana, and other nostalgia recolors. On August 3, 2026 Riot answered on X: if you already own the modern version of the skin, you are granted the Classic Chroma for free. If you already purchased a Classic Chroma while owning the modern skin, you receive an RP refund.
PCGamesN and community coverage framed the reversal as another community win after mid-July's free Classic Skins flip. Full cosmetic baseline still lives on Classic Skins and Portraits & Chromas.
Who Gets Free Chromas and Who Gets Refunds
Own the matching modern skin on your live League account → Classic Chroma unlocks without another RP spend. Already bought the Classic Chroma and also own the modern skin → Riot refunds the RP automatically; you should not need a separate support ticket for this specific case.
If you never owned the modern skin, Classic Chromas can still appear in the Shop as premium cosmetics. Collectors Box exclusive chromas and seasonal bundles remain separate products—see Collectors Box before assuming every recolor is covered by the ownership grant.
How This Fits Classic's Cosmetic Timeline
July PBE: Classic Skins dropped from 500 RP to free defaults after FeralPony's response—FeralPony July 17 Response and PBE Feedback Updates. August 3: Classic Chromas follow the same listen-and-fix pattern for duplicate ownership. Base retro models stay free; chromas stop punishing players who already paid once on live.
Classic cosmetics still do not transfer to live Summoner's Rift. Portraits, Pass tracks, and Prestige Magma Chamber rewards continue on Prestige Magma Chamber. Grassroots organizers celebrating cosmetics can also request Triumphant Ryze via Triumphant Ryze Returns.

Open Collection in Classic, confirm owned modern skins show matching Classic Chromas unlocked, and check Purchase History if you bought chromas between July 29 and August 3. Give account sync a day before opening Player Support tickets.
Bank freed RP for Pass cosmetics or wave-two IP planning ahead of Patch 26.16 on Patch 26.16 Preview. Keep Draft pages current with Perfect Runes & Masteries while the August calendar rolls toward Council voting.
