Classic Game Modes and Queues
Every League Classic queue explained: Draft PvP, Co-op vs AI, custom games, positional preferences, and Summoner's Journey ranks.
Launch Queue Types
Riot Yina confirmed in the July 14, 2026 dev blog that League Classic launches with three queue types: a single PvP Draft queue, Co-op vs AI, and custom games. There is no ranked Classic ladder at launch—Riot designed the mode for social play with friends rather than a sweaty grindfest.
Classic Draft is the primary experience. Co-op vs AI lets you learn old rune pages, item actives, and map pacing without Draft pressure. Custom games support private lobbies for the scientific work that starts with wait, let me try something.
Positional Preference System
Classic Draft replaces the old role call-out chaos with a positional preference system. Select your preferred roles in order before queueing. Riot tries to give your first choice, avoids your last pick, and may assign second or third preference to keep queue times healthy.
This modernization coexists with old gameplay systems—pre-rework kits, classic items, and slower combat pacing remain intact. Full details on Role Preferences.
Summoner's Journey Ranks
After reaching Classic Level 10, you begin Summoner's Journey at Salt rank, progressing through Wood and higher tiers up to Legend. Only a single-digit percentage of players reach Legend—climbing high requires skill and dedication without turning Classic into ranked stress.
Summoner's Journey rewards flex on friends while keeping matchmaking accessible. Track rewards on Summoner's Journey and level milestones on Classic Levels.
Queue Strategy for Launch Week
Expect longer Draft queues during launch week. Start with Co-op vs AI to configure runes on Rune Pages, then transition to Draft when comfortable. Use Release Countdown to time your first session for July 29, 8:00 AM PDT Patch 26.15.
Custom games let veterans test AP Master Yi routes, Deathfire Grasp combos, and old Sion stunlock setups before risking IP in Draft. Share custom lobbies with friends—Riot emphasized squad play as Classic's core identity.
